A Very Sunny Christmas ( Blu-ray )

Ahh the Christmas season, for some it’s a time of loving and caring, for others it involves breaking into other people’s homes and stealing their presents, or a bevy of “Santa’s” bringing you gifts to sleep with your mom, or even your dad buying all the stuff you wanted for himself.  Hopefully your Christmas’ aren’t anything like the last 3 examples if so then you’re the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.  The cult FX series has released a direct to video Christmas Special, which is sure to offend and delight everyone.

Christmas is nearly here and the Paddy’s gang has got the spirit. Well, not really. For them, the holidays have always been a time of trickery, backstabbing, and disappointment. But this year things are going to be different as they are determined to rediscover the joy in Christmas. Essentially an extended 45 minute episode, this special keeps up with the quality that has come to be known with the series.

I wish I could rave about the 1.78:1 1080p transfer on this release but sadly all they did was upscale the DVD transfer to the HD resolution, though they do at least tell you that on the introduction to the disc so you know what you’re getting into before you watch it, but by that time you’ve already bought and opened the Blu-ray and it’s too late to return it.  The 5.1 track does however get a little upgrade from the standard def version, instead of the Dolby Digital 5.1 track on the DVD we are treated to a DTS-MA 5.1 mix, but it this isn’t the release that would benefit from such an upgrade.  So if you’re planning on buying this you don’t need to shell out the extra money for the HD release as it is identical in every way to the SD version.  There are a couple of special features on this disc the most notable being deleted flashback scenes, but we also get a behind the scenes featurette as well as a sing-a-long video, but that’s it.

The A Very Sunny Christmas is well worth adding to your collection if you’re a hardcore fan of the series, the special is a clever and outrageous send-up of the holiday special as only “the gang” could do.
