Friday the 13th [2009] (Blu-ray)

Slasher films have become oversaturated in the film landscape since the 1980’s and one of the Godfather’s of the genre have been the Friday the 13th franchise. Well now the people behind the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake (Michael Bay and his Platnium Dunes production company) and director Marcus Nispel have decided to reboot one of the movies that started it all and easily one of the most recognizable characters in movie history Jason Voorhees.
Setup as a reboot (ala Batman Begins) and not a remake this new Friday quickly begins with a scene that sums up the events of the 1980 original with the beheading of Jason’s mother and quickly jumps ahead to the present day and introduces us to a generic group of horny 20-somethings looking for a crop of marijuana growing wild around Camp Crystal Lake and are soon slaughtered at the hands of a burlap sack wearing Jason. We are then introduced to another set of generic 20-somethings and sit back and watch as they are picked off one-by-one. While not really original it was still relatively enjoyable. As far as how the disc looks, the blu-ray disc does a great job in presenting the films 2.4:1 aspect ratio, all colors are well balanced with no compression artifacts to be found! The 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundmix also does a great job in filling your room with sound. The special features are fairly standard though there is no commentary track on the disc however there is a pretty good making of featurette, as well as a feature that lets you jump to the 7 best kills in the film, there is also a Picture-in-Picture trivia track. Overall there is nothing really special about this film but fans of the series will definately find something in there that they like.
