Punch Out(Wii)

For all intent and purposes this game IS Mike Tyson’s Punch out. The fighting system is nearly identical, and besides the addition of one NEW character, a “Secret Character” and the absence of Mike Tyson the cast heisted directly from the NES classic. Punch Out for Wii offers a slew of control options including motion controls and lets you use your Wii Balance Board which has been in a corner collecting dust for months. You can try and test those options, but there is only one way to play this game and that’s with the classic NES style controls, just turn your Wiimote to the side and you’re ready to go. There is one blaring difference in this game when compared to it’s 8bit counterpart and that is difficulty. This game is HARD, really hard! At it’s core, Punch Out is a puzzle game, for the most part all the fighters use the same patterns they did in their NES days. Where the game gets really difficult is once you’ve completed it and have to now go and defend your title. Opponents find gimmicks, tricks and new patterns that make them much harder to defeat. Normally this is frustrating, and still is to some extent in Punch Out, but just like it’s old school little brother they manage to make the game frustrating yet impossible to put down. You always feel like it’s your fault you lost the match and if you tweak your strategy just a bit, you could have won the fight.

Visually the game is perfect which is saying a lot given the Wii’s track record for graphics. It looks exactly as would imagine it, bright, vibrant with lots of great animations and character. The audio also shines, the updated sound track is great re-interpolating the classic score using the sounds of your opponents nation! The game also features a two player mode, new cinemas, training and more. Bottom line is, if you were a fan of Mike Tyson’s Punch Out or enjoy fun games, with simple play mechanics and astronomical levels replayability, hell even if just you own a Wii…. Punch out is a must buy!
